National Organizations Serving Asian-Pacific American StudentsStudent Unions, Professional Student Organizations, Asian American Studies, MoreFollowing is a shortlist of major national organizations representing Asian-Pacific American student interests. Collectively, they constitute a network for information and events programming that extends to hundreds of campuses nationwide. This list is by no means exhaustive, and each recommended resource can provide further information about scores more organizations for Asian American students based on geography, ethnicity, degree level, area of study, or pretty much any other interests that diverse APA students could have in common. East Coast Asian Student Union ECASU seeks to: build and strengthen Asian and Asian Pacific American student organizations to serve the social, political, and educational needs of Asian and APA students; promote the unity of Asians through greater understanding of the Asian experience in America; pursue social, cultural, economic, educational, and political equality of Asians as an under-represented group in the United States; and strengthen relations and build coalitions between Asians, Asian Pacific Americans, and all peoples of color. ECASU Membership is free and provides information about conferences, speakers, forums, news, and other events of interest concerning Asian Americans. It conducts outreach via a moderated listserv.
Midwest Asian American Student Union The Midwest Asian American Student Union strives to recognize the needs of the Asian Pacific Islanders American (APIA) community. The objectives of the Midwest Asian American Students Union are:
Association for Asian American Studies AAAS promotes professional excellence in research and teaching. The Association sponsors professional activities, increased communication and scholarly exchange between members. AAAS seeks to educate the American public about the Asian community. Their web site contains a directory for locating existing programs, as well as information for starting new ones. Membership is open to government employees, community members, and professionals serving the needs of the ethnic community.
East of California EoC is an Asian American Studies network in higher education formed in the fall of 1991 on the campus of Cornell University, where representatives from twenty-three colleges and universities resolved to establish the network. The network is a caucus within the Association for Asian American Studies, the national professional organization for the field. It meets twice annually, in the fall at the network conference held at a member campus and in the spring at the annual meeting of the Association for Asian American Studies. The network is open to interested students, faculty, and staff, and encourages the involvement of allied community institutions like museums and service organizations. Its mission is to: to institutionalize Asian American Studies; to develop regional-specific research and publications; and to provide mutual support to individuals and programs.
National Asian Pacific American Law Students
Association Founded in 1981, NAPALSA is the first and oldest national Asian Pacific American law organization. The organization promotes education, leadership, community awareness/service, communication and interaction amongst the various Asian Pacific American law students across the country and represents their interests.
Asian-Pacific American Medical Students Association APAMSA officially started in 1995 with the first National Conference and has grown in many directions. It runs several projects including: the Hepatitis B education and immunization project, the Bone Marrow Donation project, and the AAPI health initiative letter writing campaign. It has also spoken out against smoking and tobacco use targeting the Asian community, for responsible alcohol use, for immunization and for health standards addressing needs of the medically underserved. If you are a medical student or health professional interested in these issues, please get involved with your local APAMSA chapter or contact a national officer for ways to get involved. Its 2003 national conference is tentatively scheduled for November 2003 in Washington DC.
Intercollegiate Taiwanese American Students
Association ITASA is a non-profit organization providing events and resources that explore and celebrate Taiwanese American identity in order to inspire, empower, and activate its community. It holds annual Regional Conferences in the East, Midwest, and West; Leadership Retreats in various locations; and publishes an information-rich website with an interactive community archive, leaders' guidelines, campus profiles, contacts, links, and scholarship information. ITASA also cooperates with Taiwanese organizations to coordinate summer programs in Taiwan.
Taiwanese Collegian TC is an organization of overseas students from Taiwan whose mission is to "cultivate friendship and wisdom in order to fulfill the potential of the peoples, heritages, and landscape of our homeland...We aim at researching and developing proposals for political, societal, and cultural reforms in Taiwan. We want to communicate the ideas of a new Taiwanese generation and to experience teamwork spirit through participating in the Taiwanese community events. Perhaps most importantly, we wish to communicate the importance of Taiwan through association with international media, academic groups, and communities." Its key goals are to: Encourage the cooperation among Taiwanese students in the United States; to train talents in preparation of building Taiwan as an independent country; and to increase communications among new and old generations. TC is associated with different Taiwanese Students Associations on 45 college campuses in North America. Most of the TC members are graduate and post-doctorate students.
Asian Canadian "Community Page" Although it doesn't appear to have been updated in a while, the community page at Kenda Gee's Asian Canadian remains one of the larger, more attractive online collections of links to all things Asian Canadian. While not exclusively dedicated to student organizations, the community page contains pointers to a great number of organizations on campuses all across Canada.
