International Digital Media and Arts Association

EON Member Profile

iDMAa Home

Serving educators, practitioners, scholars and organizations with interests in digital media

The International Digital Media & Arts Association (iDMAa) is all about the convergence of people, ideas, disciplines, technologies and progress.

iDMAa is a forum for professionals working across the wide range of disciplines and initiatives that are clustered around the emerging field of Digital Media and Arts. Traditional disciplines including the Arts, Computer Science, Engineering, Journalism and Communications, Media Studies, Film and Television, and many others are embroiled in sweeping changes wrought by new technologies, new applications, and new challenges.

Colleges and universities are attempting to incorporate these new technologies and practices into their curricula, with varying results. Industry practitioners are also affected by the rapid proliferation of new media, but traditional trade associations do not offer sufficient interdisciplinary depth for creative individuals whose work cuts across boundaries.

iDMAa is a forum where progressive thinkers and creators can come together as a community — both online and in person — to share insights, concerns and experiences related to their common interests.

The International Digital Media Arts Association (iDMAa) was founded in early 2004 by a group of 15 universities. The iDMAa is dedicated to serving educators, practitioners, scholars, and organizations with interests in digital media.

Around the world, universities and colleges are creating new programs and departments to teach and conduct research in Digital Media and Digital Arts. These programs are emerging from partnerships of Art, Computer Science, Communications-Radio/TV-Journalism, English, Music, Theater, Film and other disciplines. These programs often don't fit within the neat and tidy confines of traditional university structures - their creators and champions often forge interdisciplinary partnerships to create opportunities, attract money, and stimulate explosions of creativity. Digital Media and Arts programs around the world address the production of content for existing media such as the Internet, radio and TV, digital cinema and video, computer games, cinematic special effects and animation, as well as for emerging media such as:

- mobile computing (GPS, personal digital assistants, cell phones)

- ubiquitous computing ("smart houses", "information appliances")

- interactive television

- online role playing games

- virtual reality

- distributed collaborations

The International Digital Media & Arts Association was organized by and for people working in these margins. Margins are frontiers, but they are also uncertain places. Marginal people upset the establishment, take risks and make new things happen.
