The Medical College of Virginia Hospitals and Physicians of the VCU Health System Employer Profile

Defining The Future of Healthcare.

Build Your Career On A Solid Foundation Of Excellence And Innovation.

Founded in 1838, VCU Health System (VCUHS) has a longstanding reputation for excellence in treatment, teaching and research. Uncompromising standards and cutting-edge capabilities have enabled us to attract physicians of international repute, set precedents in transplantation procedures and operate the area’s only Level I Trauma Center.

Timeless Values Chart Our Course.

From the latest technological advances in medicine, to information systems and nutritional services, the professional environment at VCUHS is defined by principled leadership and a tradition of caring that is demonstrated in everything we do. Guided by our commitment to accountability, relentless evaluation, continuous performance improvement, and vigilant system-wide communication, our caring is made visible daily by our multidisciplinary team.

Diversity is the cornerstone of our culture.

At VCU Health System, our most important assets are not bricks and mortar; they are our employees ... all 8,000+ of them. VCU Health System is an organization that reflects the community it is privileged to serve. Our employees represent a precise snapshot of the diversity in our community. With such a range of ages, ethnicities and lifestyles, VCUHS strives to meet each employee’s needs – just like we tailor care to each individual patient. We constantly develop new programs to meet our employees where they need help. We listen to their concerns, and we respond. No matter what position our employees are in, we want to help our employees when, where and how they need it most.

Complete Capability Means Far-Reaching Opportunity.

Situated on five acres in the heart of revitalized downtown Richmond, VCU Health System is Virginia’s largest public urban research and doctoral institution and offers the full spectrum of patient care services. The hospitals’ urban campus is home to Virginia Commonwealth University’s Schools of Allied Health Professionals, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy. Together, they comprise one of the largest academic healthcare centers in the United States.

Virtually every contemporary medical service is represented here through nearly 100 specialty clinics and patient care centers, many of national and international repute. Recent distinctions for VCUHS include: achievement of prestigious Magnet recognition (2006); four-time designation as a Working Mother magazine’s “100 Best Companies” and three-time designee as the Greater Richmond Area Employer of Choice. In addition, VCUHS is distinguished as Central Virginia's only Level I Trauma Center, the only academic medical center in Central Virginia and a regional referral center for all of Virginia.

Clinical areas at VCUHS include 28 inpatient units, nine intensive care units and numerous ambulatory care programs. Fourteen specialty OR teams, a full-service home care program and four areas of emergency service complete the continuum of care. In addition to multidisciplinary centers for cancer, cardiology, neurosciences and transplantation, VCUHS offers services covering every other medical need as well, from allergies, burns, and breast health to glaucoma, infertility, nutrition, orthopedics, pediatrics and stroke. Our brand new, 367,000-square-foot, 15-level, state-of-the-art Critical Care Hospital launches a new era in how seriously ill and injured patients receive care in Central Virginia. And 232 adult patient beds means our ratio of private to semi-private beds is 70 percent. The new facility also features new ORs and ICUs for surgical trauma, neonatal, cardiac, neuroscience, medical respiratory, oncology and burn center patients.

A Time To Advance.

As an outstanding teaching hospital and a leading research institution, VCUHS offers unlimited opportunities to learn and grow. Our position enables us to attract and retain top professionals and employ the most advanced techniques, protocols and technologies available, which in turn provides you with ongoing professional challenges. Additionally, extensive training programs and courses offered through the Department of Education and Professional Development enable you to keep your skills on the cutting edge of your field. Our new Critical Care Hospital is the first phase of a five-phase plan which will mean more career opportunities.

Safety First, Every Day.

Our “Safety First, Every Day.” initiative has the complete support of VCUHS administration, including Dr. Sheldon Retchin, vice president, VCU Health Sciences and CEO, VCU Health System who said, “VCUHS is one of the finest medical centers in the nation, and as an academic medical center, we have an obligation to set the highest standards for safety.” John Duval, CEO, MCV Hospitals of the VCU Health System adds, "It is our vision to be America's safest health system with zero preventable occurrences of harm to our employees, our patients and our visitors." Full implementation of the “Safety First, Every Day” initiative will take more than two years and will involve three primary phases.

As we look forward to a future of continuing innovation, we continually seek highly skilled and motivated professionals in all nursing and allied health disciplines to join our excellent team.
