About Mercy
Mercy College is a New York
metropolitan area college of nearly 10,000 students from all walks of
life studying at 5 campuses and a robust online campus. The main campus
is in Dobbs Ferry, and branch campuses are in the Bronx, Manhattan,
White Plains and Yorktown. In addition, Mercy operates access centers in
several neighborhoods in Westchester County and New York City. The
College was established in 1950 by the Sisters of Mercy to give the
opportunity for higher education to young women who wouldn't otherwise
have access to the advantages of a college education. Our campuses are
close to a network of highways and community trains and span suburban
settings and urban settings. Our Dobbs Ferry campus is very scenic and
overlooks the Hudson River. The faculty, staff and students come from
diverse backgrounds and help to maintain a really engaged community.
Consider joining us! In 1969, it became co-ed and nonsectarian, boldly
reaching out to its surrounding communities. The mission - to make
available the transformational power of a postsecondary education to
people who would not otherwise have the opportunity -- has remained
strong through all the growth and change over its rich history.
History
Founded as a junior college in 1950
under the auspices of the Sisters of Mercy, Mercy College became a
four-year college offering programs leading to the baccalaureate degree
in 1961. The College received full accreditation from the Middle States
Association in 1968. In the next half-decade, Mercy boldly set a course
for its future with a series of actions which included declaring itself
independent, non-sectarian, and co-educational, doubling the size of the
existing physical plant, and initiating the first of many community
outreach efforts to non-traditional student populations.
Mercy’s innovative spirit soared in
the 70's when it established extension centers and branch campuses
throughout communities in Westchester County and New York City, and it
positioned itself on the leading edge of the adult student market with
flexible scheduling, multiple and convenient locations, and accelerated
degree completion programs. New populations of students, many of whom
were the first in their families to pursue higher education - including
veterans, police officers, fire fighters and immigrants - found a home
at Mercy.
To further expand academic and
career opportunities for its students, the College developed a unique
partnership with a local university which allowed the university to
offer graduate programs at Mercy's main campus. By the early 80's, Mercy
was granted authority to offer its first graduate program. Throughout
the next two decades, the College expanded its portfolio of graduate
programs, and at the close of the 90's, Mercy dissolved its partnership
with the local university. Today, Mercy offers about 30 graduate
programs to thousands of students. It has become one of the leading
providers of teacher education preparation for the New York City Schools
and the surrounding communities.
Mercy added an online learning
platform in the late 80's. It was soon granted the ability to offer
entire degree programs online. In 2000 as the College celebrated its
50th anniversary, it focused its efforts on consolidating its New York
City teaching locations by opening two state-of-the-art campuses in
Manhattan and the Bronx. The online initiative has blossomed into a full
service online campus providing access to over a dozen undergraduate and
graduate programs and offering a full suite of student services.
Throughout its history, Mercy
College has remained dedicated to its mission - to make available the
transformational power of a college education to people who would not
otherwise have the opportunity. Mercy's commitment to quality, student
support and affordability - as well as innovation - remains as strong
today as ever
Academics
Today we offer a quality liberal
arts undergraduate education as well as master's degree programs in
several professional areas -- health professions, business,
counseling/psychology, and teacher training -- to students during the
day, evenings, weekends, and online, so that they can fit our rigorous
education into their lives. We offer tremendous financial support, so
that the cost of college is not a barrier to success; and we offer
learning support, access to robust technology and counseling - academic,
career and personal - to help our students achieve the level of success
they dream about. Our student body is primarily commuter students, whose
overriding similarity is that they pursue their dream of higher
education while continuing to work and support families. They are
overwhelmingly the first in their families to achieve a college
education, and they are African American, Asian, Caucasian, Latino,
ranging in age from 18 to 80, with the average age of undergraduates
being 27. Balancing their responsibilities and education, it takes most
of them more than the traditional four years to complete their
baccalaureate - and when they finish they take their place in industry,
banking, the social services, health professions and teaching but many
continue on to graduate school.
The faculty that makes this
remarkable transformation possible most often describes itself as a
"teaching faculty," dedicated to the scholarship of teaching. We have
Fulbright Scholars and national authorities in their fields. Our faculty
travel to all the campuses, so that we are able to maintain the quality
of teaching, small classes and personal interaction that lead to student
success.
Mercy College offers graduate and
undergraduate degrees targeting in-demand career fields and designed for
employment opportunities. Mercy has flexible course schedules, small
classes and 5 campuses in the greater NY area.
With a reliance on the sciences and
liberal arts, Mercy comprises eight divisions - within the divisions are
90 degree programs to choose from: Business and Accounting, Civic and
Cultural Studies, Education, Health Professions, Literature, Language
and Communication, Mathematics and Computer Information Science, Natural
Sciences and Veterinary Technology, and Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Additionally, Mercy College students received $57 million in financial
aid this year.
Mercy College is fully accredited
by the Middle States Association of College and Secondary Schools, and
registered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New
York.
