Merrill Lynch Launches American Indian Business Development GroupDawson Her Many Horses to Lead Effort
NEW YORK, September 22, 2004 — Merrill Lynch (NYSE: MER) today announced that Dawson Her Many Horses will lead its American Indian Business Development unit, the latest in the firm's initiatives delivering customized wealth management strategies to multicultural clients. Through its Multicultural and Diversified Business Development Group, the firm currently specializes in working with women, African-American, Hispanic and South Asian clients. Mr. Her Many Horses will coordinate the firm's efforts with Native American governments, their enterprises and their members. Coinciding with his appointment, Mr. Her Many Horses, along with several senior Merrill Lynch executives, will host a special reception for Tribal leaders and their delegations, jointly organized by Merrill Lynch and Americans for Indian Opportunity (AIO), as part of the events celebrating the Grand Opening of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. The Grand Opening is expected to be the most highly attended American Indian event in U.S. history. In his role, Mr. Her Many Horses will manage Merrill Lynch's retail, institutional, and asset management strategy and business efforts for initiating services for American Indians and working closely with the American Indian professionals and Financial Advisors active in Indian Country. Having grown up on South Dakota's Rosebud Reservation, he is an enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. He graduated from Columbia University with a B.A. in political science, and has worked for Merrill Lynch since 2002, where he started as an intern in the Office of Public Policy Analysis. Merrill Lynch has a long history of serving as a trusted advisor to several American Indian Tribal governments and currently has relationships with more than 50 Tribes. Along with the firm's Global Markets and Investment Banking group, Merrill Lynch's Tribal financial services encompasses over $4.5 billion in tribal assets under management and offers: direct lending and credit facilities; private equity and alternative investments; tribal savings accounts; minor's trusts; 401 (k); deferred compensation and qualified benefit plans; and member investment education and services. The National Museum of the American Indian will be home to one of the largest and most diverse collections of Indian art and artifacts in the world. The Opening Ceremony will begin on the National Mall as over 10,000 people march in the Native Nations Procession, followed by presentations by Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell and Senator Dan K. Inouye, among others. Brian Henderson, vice chairman, Merrill Lynch Europe, Middle East and Africa, serves on the board of the museum. The Merrill Lynch-AIO event that evening will honor AIO's most recent initiative, the Advancement of Global Indigineity (AGI) and recognize His Excellency John Wood, New Zealand Ambassador to the United States, for his contribution to AIO.
