Do Latinos Hold the 2008 Trump
Card?
The Pew Hispanic Center investigates Latinos' role in the 2008 presidential race
By Carol Amoruso, HAV Editor
Just days before the Texas primary where the test of Latino voting power and Democratic
presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton’s ability to hold onto her voters will join, and with pundits
wagering that Latinos, whose numbers are strategically clustered in four likely swing states, will
be the deciding vote in this year’s presidential election, the
Pew Hispanic Center has come out with a
study of Latino voters.
A main, and very worrisome point for the Republican Party is the finding that, what was a clear
upward trend in Republican support had dipped considerably since 2006. Less than two short years
ago, the spread between Latinos who favored the Democratic Party and those the GOP was only 21%
Today’s gap is 34%.
The study also revealed that an overwhelming number of Latinos believe that the policies of
President Bush have been of more harm than help to Latinos. You can find the summary on the Pew
website as well as the full report. (A note of caution: some of the center’s data was compiled in
October of last year and don’t reveal significant cases when many more candidates were vying for their
party’s presidential nomination ,and thus don’t reflect current voter preferences with a
much-narrowed field.)
As one of the HAV’s main sources of facts and figures, we urge you, if you’re of like
curiosities, to subscribe to the center’s email alerts.

involvement in the arts, society and politics of Africa, the
Caribbean, and the Latin World have been the most inspiring and her
work concentrates on those areas. She travels extensively but lives
