Moving towards passage of the DREAM Act?
By the HAV staff
The Obama administration has been
pursuing vigorously the deportation of undocumented criminals while
beginning to press for reform of immigration laws that will consider
more humanely the plight of undocumented workers.
More behind the scenes, the
administration is easing restrictions on another group of the
undocumented: students who entered the US as children. Even students
who proclaim their illegal status and those in detention are repeatedly
being spared deportation and/or freed.
These amnesties suggest support on
the part of the administration for passage of the nettlesome and
long-pending DREAM Act, which would grant legal status to those same
young people, afford them vastly greater educational opportunity, and a
smoother path to citizenship.
