1 The early works of these pioneers in African literature were freely and well received by the European publishing industry and audiences. Achebe’s first novel, Things Fall Apart (1958) and the second novel by wa Thiong’o The River Between (1965) focused on the effects of colonialism on their respective societies in West and East Africa. In 1962 Heinemann Press named Achebe the pioneer editor of the African Writers Series.

2 The Macmillan Writer’s Prize for Africa is a good example of those literary prizes that are directed more to promoting particular (Eurocentric) values than eliciting good challenging writing from Africa.

3 Heinemann, for instance, has stopped general publishing or releasing new titles under the African Writers Series. AWS instead re-releases old titles for the educational market.
