The LA State DoL reports it is working around the clock and through the weekend to accept Unemployment Insurance (UI) and Disaster Unemployment Assistance claims and process payments through multiple methods:

In LOUISIANA

  • If able, go to the nearest One Stop or Job Center to file claims
  • Or, file via Internet at www.LAWORKS.net
  • Or, check back at LAWorks.net for 1-800 number when available

In TEXAS

  • 1000 phone lines will be installed in The Astrodome where evacuees can file for UI benefits by phone
  • TX workers will also deploy mobile command centers with computers and phones

In ALABAMA

  • Evacuees from Louisiana and Mississippi who are in Alabama may call 1-866-234-5382 to file a regular unemployment compensation claim against wages from their state.  Alabama will send that information electronically back to the state of origin as soon as that state is able to receive the information. A notation will be made on the claim if the person is unemployed as a result of the disaster. Also, those filing against wages from Louisiana may now file benefits over the Internet at: http://www.laworks.net.
  • Unemployed Alabama workers in Baldwin, Mobile, and Washington counties "declared disaster areas as a direct result of Hurricane Katrina may be eligible for benefits under the Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) program.  Generally, persons who are eligible for state unemployment benefits are not eligible for DUA, but a claimant may qualify for DUA if state UC benefits are exhausted.  Claims for state unemployment compensation (UC) benefits may be filed beginning on Tuesday, August 30, 2005 by calling 1-866-234-5382. The final date to file a claim in these counties is September 29, 2005.  See Alabama Department of Industrial Relations.
