LA & TX Labor Departments Employment Disaster Relief
The LA State DoL reports it is working
around the clock and through the weekend to accept Unemployment
Insurance (UI) and Disaster Unemployment Assistance claims
and process payments through multiple methods:
In LOUISIANA
- If able, go to the nearest One Stop or Job Center
to file claims
- Or, file via Internet at
www.LAWORKS.net
- Or, check back at LAWorks.net
for 1-800 number when available
In TEXAS
- 1000 phone lines will be installed in The Astrodome where
evacuees can file for UI benefits by phone
- TX workers will also deploy mobile command centers with
computers and phones
In ALABAMA
- Evacuees from Louisiana and Mississippi who are in
Alabama may call 1-866-234-5382 to file a regular
unemployment compensation claim against wages from their state.
Alabama will send that information electronically back to the state
of origin as soon as that state is able to receive the information.
A notation will be made on the claim if the person is unemployed as
a result of the disaster. Also, those filing against wages from
Louisiana may now file benefits over the Internet at:
http://www.laworks.net.
- Unemployed Alabama workers in Baldwin, Mobile, and
Washington counties "declared disaster areas as a direct
result of Hurricane Katrina may be eligible for benefits under the
Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) program.
Generally, persons who are eligible for state unemployment benefits
are not eligible for DUA, but a claimant may qualify for DUA if
state UC benefits are exhausted. Claims for state unemployment
compensation (UC) benefits may be filed beginning on Tuesday, August
30, 2005 by calling 1-866-234-5382. The final date to file a
claim in these counties is September 29, 2005. See
