Yoon Moves Ahead to Finals in Boston Race
Report by Phil Tajitsu Nash
Sam Yoon, an immigrant Korean American, is poised to become the first
Asian American city council member in Boston, but only if he can raise
funds and get out the vote over the next six weeks. He came in fifth in
the preliminary race (of 15 candidates) yesterday, and must finish in
the top four among eight candidates on November 8th.
Sam is an elder at his church, yet a strong supporter of civil
rights for all, including gays. He studied at Princeton and
Harvard (Kennedy School), yet he has worked for years as an advocate for
affordable housing, and also as a teacher at two inner-city schools.
He and his wife have two small children, and he has pledged to make the
city's schools safe and effective for all children. For more on
Sam, see Sam Yoon: Boston City
Councilman?
Those outside Boston who want to help the campaign should encourage
friends and relatives in Boston to go to the polls on November 8th, and
make donations in whatever amounts they can afford (see
www.samyoon.com for details). Those in the Boston area should
contact the campaign at
candidate@samyoon.com or 617- 288-1241 to
volunteer.
The six week sprint between a primary of this kind and a general
election is usually won by the machine politicians who can raise money
quickly. Asian Americans have no such machine in Boston, but with the
support of Asian Americans in Boston and nationwide, Sam Yoon will
finally bring the voice of a well-respected Asian American community
advocate to the Boston City Council on November 8th.
