Boston Public Library Beefs Up Chinese and Vietnamese Language Resources
Adds kids' books, DVDS, even Chinese
dial-a-story phone service
By M. Thang, Sampan
Boston - Dec. 2, 2005 - Looking for Chinese or Vietnamese books or
DVDs? Want to join a Chinese-language book discussion or find a Chinese
story-telling group for kids?
You can -- for free -- at the Boston Public Library. Thanks to a $20,000
federal grant, the library will have Chinese-language books and DVDs for
children, teens and adults. In addition, children can attend
Chinese-language story hours and call a special phone-number to hear
Chinese stories. Also, the library will have events for Chinese New Year
and Asian Heritage month in May.
Starting December 6, the public can call (617) 859-2262, the library’s
new Chinese Dial-A-Story phone number, to hear weekly stories told in
Chinese. On December 11, the Copley Square branch of the BPL will have a
book discussion in Chinese of “Wo Men Sa” by Yang Jiang.
The federal grant will enable the BPL to purchase Chinese-language books
that have won the prestigious Mao Dun Literature Award in China. Also
available will be Chinese translations of books that are on the summer
reading lists of Boston public schools.
The books will join the stacks of Vietnamese-language titles that are
already available at the BPL. These works include “Harry Potter,” “The
Wizard of Oz,” and Vietnamese folktales, at the main library in Copley
Square. At the library’s Uphams Corner branch in Dorchester, Vietnamese
books for adults include biographies, historical novels, and travel
guides.
