UI-UC Holds K-12 Teachers Workshop on APAs and Asian Diaspora
June 19-24, 2005 workshop on Asian Americans and Asian Diaspora for
K-12 teachers hosted by Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies and
the Asian American Studies Program
Information from UIUC Asian American Studies Program
Specialists on East Asian Diasporas from the University of
Illinois and other universities will lead lectures/ discussions on
various aspects of Asian American experiences. Among likely topics to be
covered are the history of Asian immigration and changing immigration
policies; the differing histories of particular Asian immigrant groups;
the social, cultural, economic, and religious diversity within Asian
American communities; educational, social, legal and political issues
facing Asian Americans; and sketches of specific groups such as Chinese,
Koreans, Filipinos, Hmong, and others. Because a wide range of topics
will be covered, readings will be available to participants in advance.
One session will be devoted to Curriculum. Published and online
curriculum materials will be introduced and help will be provided so
that participants can develop or expand their own personal curricular
materials.
Videos that complement and illustrate issues and topics discussed
during the presentations will be shown in the evenings. At that time
participants also will be introduced to the Center’s Asian Educational
Media Service and to other video, library, and online resources for
understanding and teaching about Asian Americans.

An Asian Diaspora Conference will be held Friday and
Saturday, 17-18 June, prior to the workshop. Applicants admitted to
the workshop will have the option of coming to the University of
Illinois early, room and board will be provided, to attend this
conference.
Eligibility: Preference will be given to full-time teachers who
plan to incorporate the study of East Asian Diasporas and/or Asian
Americans into their curriculum. A maximum of 20 participants will be
selected to attend.
Housing: Rooms will be provided in a private residence hall on
the University of Illinois campus. Meals –Sunday dinner through Friday
lunch –will also be provided.
Application Deadline: Applications will be considered on a
space-available basis. Priority will be given to applications received
before 30 April 2005. You may fax

Credit: This course may be taken for a ˝ unit of University of
Illinois graduate credit. Participants are responsible for paying their
UI tuition.
Cost: The cost of the workshop (workshop fee, room and board,
teaching material) is supported from a Title VI- National Resource
Center grant and the UIUC Asian American Studies Program. Applicants who
are accepted into the workshop must pay a non-refundable registration
fee of $100.
