APIAs Across the Nation: Host a DebateWatch

Wednesday, October 13 at 9:00 PM the Presidential Candidates square off for their final debate in Arizona

By APIAVote.org and IMDiversity.com Staff

Your vote is vital to this upcoming Presidential election. Do you remember the last Presidential election? Only 537 votes determined the presidency! How can you actively participate in your democracy? And how can you cast your essential vote to the ‘right’ candidate? Watch the presidential debates and host your own DebateWatch today!

Hosting a DebateWatch Party is easy! Just pick a place with a TV, get together a group of people, and ask one of them to be the discussion leader.  DebateWatches can be small events in your home or large televised community meetings. Host a DebateWatch party and be a part of democracy!

..and call in after the debate!

Immediately following the debate, join in on the conference call, where participants can listen to the Presidential Candidates, or notable APIA surrogates, who will speak to the APIA community about the importance of going out to the polls on the Election Day.  If you are in a state where voter registration deadlines have not yet passed, you even have time to register voters at the party, as well!

All you need is a house or apartment that will have access to a speakerphone and ten of your friends and relatives. Be sure to think of friends who typically are not as involved in the election process. This is your chance to encourage them to vote. Access to computer, Internet, and printer, is also highly desired for online voter registration.

What else can we do?

And at your APIA DebateWatch, TAKE ACTION!

  • Register friends/guests to vote! Click here
  • Organize voter registration drives between now and the registration deadline in your state.
  • Bring your laptop, and play the www.onevoteradio.org/apa/ to reach people in Asian languages you may not know.
  • Volunteer to be a poll monitor! Click here

One of the great things about DebateWatch parties is that they provide an opportunity for people who might be undecided about who to vote for to get informed, to dialogue with others, and to get inspired to vote and help others register to vote

That's why a collaboration of four non-partisan organizations: APIA Vote!, National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum, sheVotes.org and The Asian Pacific American Women's Leadership Institute got together to develop radio PSAs in nine languages: English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, Vietnamese, Lao, Cambodian, Tagalog and Hindi, to encourage APIAs to register to vote, and turn out to vote, in the November 2 election.

APIAs could be the deciding factor in this year's election.  After all, APIAs are a swing vote.  And the largest volume of voters, and undecided voters, are women!

In the 2000 election, 97 million American women were eligible to vote, but only 69 million registered, 59 million voted, and 38 million didn't vote.  In the 2000 election, 2.5 million APIA women were eligible to vote, but only 1.1 million voted, and 1.4 million didn't vote.  This year, more than 100 million women and 3 million APIA women are eligible to vote.

So take action, by registering new voters and getting out the vote in the 2004 election!  Make sure no women's vote, and no APIA vote, is forgotten or left behind!

Spread the word!
