May 18, 2004 - "Hawaiian Music's Next Generation" (CA)

7:30 p.m., San Leandro Public Library, 300 Estudillo Ave., CA.  Free Concert. Hawaiian Music's Next Generation features a dynamic lineup of young stars, weaving musical stories through a magical blend of Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukulele. All young masters at their craft, they continue to carry on the traditions passed down to them, as they share the aloha spirit through the music of Hawaii.  Performers include Hawaii Music Award nominee Keoki Kahumoku, two-time Hawaii Music Award Winner Herb Ohta, Jr. father and son team Dennis and David Kamakahi, and San Leandro's Patrick Landenza, musican, songwriter, producer, educator, tour creator, and one of the leading forces behind Hawaiian slack key guitar. May 19, 2004 - Luncheon Celebrating API Heritage Month and Older Americans Month (CA)

11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.; Asian Community Center, 7375 Park City Dr., Sacramento, (Interstate Highway 5 south, exit on Florin West. Left on Greenhaven Dr., left on Park City Dr.). The Asian Community Center (ACC) and the Area 4 Agency on Aging (A4AA) partner together to hold a luncheon in celebration of Older Americans Month and Asian Pacific Islander (API) Heritage Month. The event will highlight the important contributions of family caregivers. As well, the event is a special tribute to Bennie Yep, the "ripest" active program participant of ACC who is turning 100 years young in May. Attendance is extended primarily to caregivers participating in A4AA-funded respite programs at ACC, Cordova Neighborhood Church, and Jewish Family Services. May 20, 2004 - New Literary Frontiers: Asian American Poetry (NY)

NYC Asia Society, 6:30 p.m.  Asian American poets Tina Chang, Ravi Shankar and Prageeta Sharma read from their new collections of poetry. In Chang's collection, Half-Lit Houses, the speaker delve into the past, addressing problems of family and heritage that culminate in praising a mythical father. Combining rumination with the use of language as an instrument for music, Shankar's Instrumentality draws the reader deeper into the works with currents of Indian spirituality and western philosophy. Sharma's second collection, The Opening Question, is filled with poems that run the gamut from imaginary urban landscapes to chronological histories. Reception and book signing follow. 2 million people who speak Chinese at home. Next to Spanish, Chinese is the most widely spoken non-English language in the country. French and German rank third and fourth, but Tagalog (1.2 million) ranks fifth, Vietnamese (1.0 million) sixth and Korean (894,000) eighth. The number of Vietnamese speakers and the number of Italian speakers (in seventh place) are not statistically different.

May 28-29, 2004 - National Conference Held by Census Bureau's Advisory Committee on the Asian Population (CA)

The US Census Bureau's Advisory Committee on the Asian Population was established in 1985 to advise the Census Bureau on ways to achieve a more accurate count of Asians during the decennial census. The Committee, along with the Census Bureau's other four race and ethnic advisory committees (representing the African American, American Indian and Alaska Native, Hispanic, and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander populations), advises the Census Bureau on the unique data collection needs of diverse populations and communities.

On May 28-29, 2004, the Census Bureau's Advisory Committee on the Asian Population will hold a national conference, focusing on the benefits of census data to the Asian population and on the overall importance of accurate quality data to the decennial process. The conference will be held at the Holiday Inn Oakland Airport, 5090 Hegenberger Road, Oakland, California.
