Asian Pacific Heritage Month Events Starter Calendar 2004

Hawaiian Music's Next Generation features a dynamic lineup of young stars, weaving musical stories through a magical blend of Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukulele. All young masters at their craft, they continue to carry on the traditions passed down to them, as they share the aloha spirit through the music of Hawaii. In Chang's collection, Half-Lit Houses, the speaker delve into the past, addressing problems of family and heritage that culminate in praising a mythical father. Combining rumination with the use of language as an instrument for music, Shankar's Instrumentality draws the reader deeper into the works with currents of Indian spirituality and western philosophy. Sharma's second collection, The Opening Question, is filled with poems that run the gamut from imaginary urban landscapes to chronological histories. Reception and book signing follow. The Committee, along with the Census Bureau's other four race and ethnic advisory committees (representing the African American, American Indian and Alaska Native, Hispanic, and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander populations), advises the Census Bureau on the unique data collection needs of diverse populations and communities. On May 28-29, 2004, the Census Bureau's Advisory Committee on the Asian Population will hold a national conference, focusing on the benefits of census data to the Asian population and on the overall importance of accurate quality data to the decennial process.
