The National Council of Asian Pacific Americans,
founded in 1996 is a coalition of twenty-one Asian Pacific American
organizations nation wide. Based in Washington D.C, NCAPA serves to
represent the interests of the greater APA community and to provide a
national voice for APA issues.
Over the past several years, many Asian Pacific
American (APA) organizations have expanded in size and influence. This
change in the status quo created awareness in the community of the need
for a national coalition that could bring together APA advocacy
organizations on all levels - from local/community groups to large
national membership organizations - to speak with one voice. With the
help of former United States Congressman Norman Mineta - who went on to
become the first Asian Pacific American Cabinet Secretary in United
States history - a series of meetings were held, involving over twenty
Asian Pacific American groups to discuss how to meet the needs of the
APA community at large.
The consensus from these meetings was that the
existence of many strong APA groups dictated that any new coalition
should add value to and build upon the work of these organizations and
not duplicate their efforts. NCAPA was formally instituted in 1997 as a
coalition of existing organizations, with the understanding that the
structure and goals of the group could change with time.
