Black Accountants

Gwendolyn D. Skillern, CPA
Greenbelt, MD (BlackNews.com) - Gwendolyn D. Skillern, CPA, was
recently elected president of the National Association of Black
Accountants, Inc. (NABA), the nation's premier organization for
minority professionals in accounting and finance. The Senior Vice
President and General Auditor for CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst)

Presidential Service Award in 2004.
"I believe I am uniquely qualified to lead NABA in our drive to new
heights," said Skillern. "My extensive business, professional,
leadership and organization background well positions me to serve as
a voice and advocate for NABA in the profession."
In her role as NABA president, Skillern's goals include enhancing
and expanding core programs such as the organization's Financial
Literacy Program, and increasing membership to include the growing
number of African American CPAs. Skillern is also going to focus on
expanding NABA's domestic and global influences through strategic
alliances with its corporate partners, the American Institute of
CPAs and the Association for the Advancements for Black Accountants
in South Africa (ABASA). NABA's theme for 2006 is NABA: Power,
Passion, Possibilities.
"Gwen has a long, active history with NABA and has served in various
roles for many years," said Darryl R Matthews, Sr., executive
director and COO of NABA. "Her dedication and hard work is well
respected within our industry and organization. I look forward to
working with her in this new role as president."
A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, Skillern went
on to get a Master of Business Administration from Stanford
University. Throughout her career, she has served in public
accounting, internal audit and finance roles in various capacities.
In addition to her role with NABA, Skillern serves on a number of
boards, including the advisory board for Baltimore HIV Pediatric,
and the Board of Directors for Marian House and the Baltimore
Metropolitan Chapter of the Coalition of 100 Black Women, where she
received the Jewel Award for outstanding service in 2005.
A resident of Baltimore County, Skillern earlier this year was named
among "Maryland's Top 100 Women" by The Daily Record.
